Bowen
Island Arts Council
Since its inception in 1987, the Bowen Island Arts Council
(BIAC) has played an integral role in the community,
celebrating the wealth of talent and expertise on the
Island, advocating for the advancement of the arts and
opportunities for local artists, and stimulating an
awareness of the diversity and richness of the arts on
Bowen.
A non-profit, umbrella organization, the BIAC has links
to a number of community organizations including the
Community Choir, the BI Fibre Arts Guild, Island Classical
Concerts, Theatre on the Isle, the Bowen Island Public
Library, Young Artists of Bowen, the Music Association.
Currently, among its many projects and activities, the
BIAC is:
- creating and running a 'home' for the arts at The
Gallery at Artisan Square
- spearheading campaigns for a "community-owned" arts
home, especially for the performing arts
- working to establish a Bowen Island cultural
centre
- publishing a monthly newsletter, Arts Page
- staging an annual art summer visual art exhibition
and sale
- co-hosting Meet the Author Evenings with the Phoenix
On Bowen and the Bowen Island Library
- co-sponsoring the annual Young Artists of Bowen
Exhibition
- co-sponsoring Music Association coffeehouses
- working with the Bowen Island Parks and Recreation
Commission and the Chamber of Commerce to produce a
cultural policy and plan for Bowen Island
- distributing a cd and anthology, both locally
produced
- producing and planning special arts events
Friends of the Arts
Members of the BIAC are truly friends of the arts, who
appreciate the value of the arts and cultural influences in
the life of this community. They are actively engaged in
ensuring that the arts on Bowen continue to thrive.
Membership is support for the arts on Bowen.
Our members receive the following additional

- eligibility to apply for group members' assistance
grants
- shared expertise and resources
- insurance coverage for events
- sponsorship in fund raising endeavours

BOWEN ISLAND ARTS COUNCIL
Since 1987 the Bowen Island Arts Council has coordinated
classical music and jazz, visual and literary events. The
new Board members are: Hans Behm, Heather Croil, Roberta
Nadeau, Sigurd Sabathil, Eric Sherlock, Leslee Kirk, Ian
Davidson, Bernice Lever, Cliff Rowlands, Julie Andres, Ian
Kennard, Hans Merkelbach.

Monthly board meetings are held at the Bowen Island
community School on the last Wednesday evening of the month.
Everyone is welcome to attend. For more information
concerning dates, location and time, please contact the Arts

Arts Page is a monthly newsletter of arts happenings on
Bowen Island. It is distributed free by mail drop to all
households on the Island. If you wish to list your arts
event in Arts Page, telephone the Arts Council office at
947-2454.
